Swilland Chequers alehouse

historical era: ancient

Shown as ‘Chequers alehouse’ on a farm map of 1804. The field to the west was Chequer Field in 1792, so it is likely that the alehouse goes back at least that far. The field was Chequers Field in 1840 (tithe map), and the name continued into the mid-20th century when three fields here (including Chequers Field) were amalgamated. It looks as though the beerhouse had closed by c.1840 – on the tithe map the house (item 24) is called ‘Old Chequers Cottage’.from Steve Podd
