Large village famed as the birthplace of John Constable (b 1776) who is possibly England's greatest landscape painter. The village was recorded in Domesday as "Bercolt" and appears on John Speed's 1610 map as "Estberholt". In the hamlet of Flatford, Willy Lott's cottage (a typical yeoman's house on a bank of the river Stour) remains an iconic view near to the millhouse which was immortalised in Constable's Haywain. The churchyard contains a unique wooden bell cage. Also see www.e-bergholt.net
