About Chediston

Chediston Hall was built by Wm. Plumber in an Elizabethan style. The village's name is said to derive from Cedd's Stone, a large chunk of sandstone which stood in lands owned by the one-time Rockstone Manor. A large Roman building at Hernehill was partly excavated in 1965. A tower mill on the road to Linstead was demolished in 1925.

The village was recorded in Domesday variously as "Cedestan", "Sedestana" and "Cidestanes". John Speed's 1610 map shows the village as "Cheſten".
