The village is noted for the Grade 1 listed church of St Peter's which has a round tower dating from Saxon times. It was recorded in Domesday as "Buresiart".
Bruisyard College was founded in 1354, but replaced by a Franciscan nunnery in 1366. The nunnery was dissolved in 1539.
The new village hall has a license to sell alcohol and the locals have a pub evening on every Thursday night where they sell bottled real ale, all are welcome to attend.
