A linear village with a modern estate to the northern end, recorded in Domesday as "Wittlesham". Older buildings are set around the bridge in the steep valley of the river Fynn. Carl Giles OBE was a famous local resident and a cartoonist for the Daily Express for about 50 years until his death in 1995 aged 78. He also worked for the East Anglian Daily Times in Ipswich and created about 7500 published cartoons mainly featuring characters from a fictitious family including the famous "grandma" character which dates back to 1945.
