A village on a tributary of the Gipping, recorded in Domesday as "Watdena" or "Wederdena".. The aisle of the church was built by Sir John Sulyard, Lord Chief Justice to Richard III. A later Sulyard was a leading supporter of Queen Mary, and saw a local protestant resident burnt at the stake.
The Pest House (on the road to Haughley Green) was probably used to isolate plague victims from the village.
