About Thorington Street
A small part of Stoke by Nayland parish about 2km south east of the main settlement. The hamlet and a small reservoir lie close to the confluence of the rivers Stour and Box. Thorington Hall is a 16th cent. House with 18th cent. additions owned by the National Trust.
The recently restored mill is worth a look. There has been a watermill here since Saxon times; the river was diverted to run where the original builders wanted the mill. Timbers in the present mill still show signs of a fire early in the 20th century when the miller tried to burn it down in order to get insurance money. Unfortunately for him, the villages noticed the fire and put it out.
