The watermill situated beside the river Gipping provides an attractive centre-point to this village which is located just on the edge of Ipswich. Some of the earliest evidence for man's presence in Suffolk has been found in the gravel around here. Late Upper Palaeolithic bone and antler tools (about 1000 BC) and Mesolithic flint tools (about 6500 BC) have been uncovered. The A1100 is an old Roman road.

The Tithe Barn dates from the 17th or 18th century and is now owned by the community and used for a variety of activities.
