A village close to the north bank of Stour estuary, with good walks to Holbrook bay. It was recorded in Domesday as "Herchesteda".

It's said that there was a red-light district in Harkstead in the latter years of WW2, presumably to keep the military busy...

Arthur Ransome was a one-time resident of Harkstead Hall.
