Close to river Gipping the area is dominated by various flooded gravel extraction pits (increasingly scenic) and a huge opencast chalk pit. The village was recorded in Domesday as "Blacham" or "Blacheham".

An alien priory cell for Benedictine monks was founded between Great Blakenham and Nettlestead circa 1092. It seems to have been dissolved by 1230. It was granted to Eton College in 1460.

From mid-2008 onwards it is expected that the local area will be increasingly dominated by the massive SnOasis project which promises to be "the world's first winter sports resort with Europe's largest indoor ski slope, measuring 415 metres long by 70 metres wide, including a 100 metre vertical drop, giving an exhilarating run to both dedicated and fun seeking skiers." SnOasis will eventually incorporate a village including new restaurants and bars.
